An Eternal Moment
—One step is all it takes to separate dreams from reality
Jadeites are valuable because they can condense the beauty of time and space, and because they are a unique creation which comes from the deft hand of a designer. Every artistic creation seems to have a life of its own, which confers movement to static beauty, and a static poise to what is moving. Mason Tsai’s “An Eternal Moment” series brings jadeite in the creation of mobile objects, such as scooters and bicycles. The designer’s starting point is the jadeite itself, its luster, colors, and shape; the stone material is then perceived by the artist as a car seat or a fuel tank, for example. All the components are built together in an exquisite fashion with meticulous care. This collection spans from a simple handlebar to tires. The common denominator is a fine and smooth craftsmanship. The works in this selection seem upright and unafraid in their uniqueness. They symbolize the fact that the designer is always advancing bravely and that the act of creation itself is a moment of eternal infinity.
“Upright and Dauntless: Jadeite Scooter”
This art piece is made with highly translucent emerald green jadeite, which can be found in increasingly scarce quantity in mining areas. This type of jadeite is translucent and limpid, and intact in its size. Its exquisite appearance resembles a scooter seat and that’s how the concept for this work originated. Thanks to computer graphics, the designer was able to make sure that the dimension and the proportion of the creation was not far from the real object. The tires were made with black jadeite of the finest quality, under the light it turns into a blackish green color. The rim section of the wheels and the body of the scooter is made with 18k gold. The designer also imbedded a moving pedal, a footstool, a windshield, and a handlebar. The seat can be opened freely. It is the perfect mixture of vintage aesthetics with a modern sense of art. The matching colors lead the observer to focus on the purity of the jadeite. The details are so meticulous, that it seems like a real scooter. Although it is a static product, it seems to reflect the designer’s aspiration to move forwards in an upright and dauntless way.
